State reportedly investigating town’s park ban on non-N.J. residents

MAHWAH – The state Office of the Attorney General is investigating a township policy that bans non-New Jersey residents from its parks and that local law enforcement widely criticized, according to NorthJersey.com.

The ban, which went into effect at the end of July, limits the use of Mahwah’s recreational facilities to New Jersey residents.

Mahwah Council President Robert Hermansen reportedly said the town is still considering ways to enforce the ban, but the town’s lawyer advised waiting on a response from the state before taking further action.

Hermansen reportedly said the rule was not meant to be discriminatory, and was instead intended to “Put Mahwah residents first” after some complained about overcrowding in the parks.
